Crush It–musings inspired by Gary Vaynerchuk’s book on following your Passion with a passion

I was reading a bit of of “Crush It” by Gary Vaynerchuk tonight. If you haven’t heard of it then you have missed out on some key insights as to what creates a profitable Internet Marketing career.

My eldest son and I took my eldest daughter out to dinner and then to our annual birthday trek over to Barnes & Noble to read. We had a grand time. I wandered on over and picked up a copy of Gary’s book to read while we were there because I love to be inspired and it is an inspiring read.

Anyhow…I read some more portions tonight. Every page really has a great deal of insight and fun to it. You can tell he just is a fun and energetic guy…even if you don’t know anything about him you can tell simply by reading the book. He talks a great deal about passion and how to actually make a living…living out and sharing those things that you love.

I absolutely love that message…because I believe it. I always have. That kind of message seems to resonate with the universe. I am not even one to give the universe special attributes or personalities or anything of the sort. But all of the stars seem to come into alignment with a message like that. (If you really want to talk about energy and how it works and interacts with itself check out my various blog posts on energetics both here and on one of my other blogs).

Doesn’t it sound great? I mean c’mon. Don’t you want to make money living out your greatest passion in life? If you say you don’t…I have one of two conclusions. Either you haven’t taken the time and energy to fully consider what this may mean for your life or somewhere you have simply lost the motivation to pursue your dreams…which is understandable in most instances because people get hurt when they take risks. I guess that is why they call it taking a risk…it doesn’t always end the way you want it to.

If you are not creating an income through living out your passion right now…then really I am just hoping that you be honest with yourself and figure out why. Whatever you decide is fine…but I think it is an incredibly worthwhile experience to come to some really honest conclusions about why you do what you do.

There is a small group of people who are living out their dreams and monetizing their passion. Then there are a larger group who are living out their passion who would like to be making a living doing it but just don’t know how to go about it.

So my question to you is…

Where do you land in this? Have you…

1. truly sat down with yourself and evaluated why you do what you do?

2. been disappointed and are too embittered to ever try again?

3. been disappointed but perhaps are willing to take a risk again?

4. gone for your dreams but been running up against that proverbial brick wall because you can’t seem to figure out how to monetize your endeavor?

5. actually are living out your passion, have been  educated and have fulfilled your goals or are on the way to fulfilling them?

I want to comment just a bit more about each of these. If you have not truly given yourself a personal evaluation in this area…what is keeping you from doing so? Maybe you have never been pushed to stretch your imagination or your creativity…now might be a good time to do so since our world is in such a flux anyhow. Perhaps you never even considered it a possibility to stake out your own claim in this world and make your own mark.

Perhaps you have truly been disappointed and would never choose to put yourself in that place again. After all…I know the pain of failure is great. Did you know that most of the hugely successful people in life have failed miserably far more than most people realize? In fact…most of the people I have talked to or read truly believe that it was their failures that enabled them ultimately to succeed. I think people in the third category above understand this and will continue to risk until they break through.

I think sometimes we simply need someone to give us permission to follow things that have become off limits for us…especially if we have failed in that area in the past. For instance…there are more than a handful of children who play sports who dream of playing in the “big leagues” someday.

Most of these kids never even try it because some “practical” adult told them it was so unlikely that it isn’t even worth pursuing…or others have failed in their effort, been ridiculed and are afraid to “go for it” again. Since I am an idea man and a dreamer and love it when others succeed, I tell my kids the exact opposite.

I tell them pursue your dreams and passions with everything that you have and I will help you do it. I also tell them…learn how to create wealth. You see…the two don’t always go hand in hand but often they can. The ultimate is learning how to create wealth while doing those things that you love.

My eldest son wants to play in the EPL (English Premier League). It is a professional soccer league in England. Is he good enough? If he believes it he is. He has the drive and the talent but can he do it? I think he can and I will help him in every way that I can.

However, along the way…his assignment is to learn how to create wealth. To do that he and his sister (our eldest of three daughters) are creating a cook book to sell. They LOVE to cook and they are excellent. Their recipes are some of the best I have had and their book is going to be great.

Another thing my son does is referee soccer. He loves the game…it is a way for him to create wealth in and around the game that he loves. He has the potential to coach and teach and share and on and on and on it goes in the area of just soccer alone.

The thing is…I am not trying to teach him impracticality…I’m trying to show him that if he simply uses his imagination and desire he can fulfill his passions in many different ways. His ultimate dream is still to play soccer at the highest level…and I think he will. He certainly is capable…but even if it does not happen it doesn’t mean he has to scrap any dreams or passions…there are still plenty of ways to create wealth by fulfilling them.

I have shared this video before but it fits perfectly here as well…someone who obviously lives out these principles…much of Cristiano Ronaldo’s success is through pursuing his dreams and working harder than everyone else in order to attain them.

My word to you…don’t let practicality stand in your way. Don’t let those voices of your peers, your spouse, your parents, past failures or whatever stand in your way. They certainly may mean the best for you but they just haven’t come to a point in their understanding yet where they will be able to fully support you…and that is okay! You can do it because your passions are strong.

Most people don’t make it when they try because they are not all in. They don’t give it enough time or enough of their energy to make it work. You really need to be beyond committed. There is no other way.

This leads us to number 4. You can give it your all but you may end up getting nowhere. You need to see my blog post on being effective. One of the key features to success in your endeavor of creating wealth through your passions is knowing what the heck you are doing. This takes training and education. Sure you can go out and do it on your own…but very few people have the ability or time to actually pull it off. In my experience it is certainly more costly to not be educated in an area that you care about than it is to learn from others who have already been there and blazed a trail before you.

I don’t know about you…but when I am out fishing in the mountains, it is a heck of a lot easier and much much faster to walk on a trail already created than to take the energy to create a new trail for yourself.

Those of you in the number 5 category…congratulations! Keep up the good fight…persevere, be smart and give till you give out. See my post on “A Killer Workout Routine.” It talks about working out but you can take those same principles of going out and having a drop dead sort of workout to your endeavor to create wealth through living out your passion. It takes that kind of dedication to make it all work.

One of the things Gary says in his book is if you have only been doing this six weeks, or six months, or even a year don’t whine about not getting to where you wanted yet. It all takes time.

It does take time. I just have one other question for you. If you don’t do it now…when are you going to start? If you don’t get started…you’ll never get anywhere, I promise you that.

Anyhow…I hope you are a bit more inspired now than you were a few minutes ago. And, I hope you feel empowered to go out there and “Crush It” as Gary would say.

By the way…you can find Gary’s book on Amazon…or I may just have a special offer for you coming up in the not too distant future.

Also…please leave me a comment and let me know which of the 5 answers you would give when asked that question. I would appreciate a RT and FB share and a digg too. Thanks! And join my google friend connect if you haven’t yet.

And…if you need any assistance, please let me know. See my “work with me” link above and shoot me your email. Don’t worry I won’t bite…but I may just be able to help you find a bit of freedom and joy in your life that may be lacking right now…or maybe it could just be the beginning of a great relationship…who knows.

Some really great insights here, Bruce.

I am definitely among those in the 5th category mentioned. It’s taking some time, but already I’m seeing results from all the *blood, sweat and tears* I’ve put into this business. For me, it is totally worth it!

Gonna go get a copy of Gary Vee’s book this weekend…can’t wait! :)

    Thanks so much!

Right on Bruce, What a great activity to do with your kids.
The video is an awesome one for me but I like the comparisons that you draw out of C. Ronaldo and others who are living passionately.
    Great! Look forward to more!

Bruce – I just finished Crush It and you have put many of my own feelings eloquently on paper (or screen) here. When I read about your kids’ cookbook, I had a fun idea. Why not do some video instruction by them, teaching other kids the basics around the kitchen. Then you could have a weekly/monthly video for kids showing them how to make and serve a dish to their families. Toss in some nutritional info and you have a really cool K2K (Kid 2 kid) product for anyone, but maybe target to the homeschool market, since you know it so well. Best to you Friend! Chip

Chip…you are awesome…always coming up with great ideas. I’ll run it past my kids and see what they think. It is a privilege to hear from you!

    Heather, Patrick…thanks for your comments.

Boy both of your comments fit together so well. I think people become hesitant of following their passions because they believe it won’t actually bring in money. They don’t quite get the mentality of buying into it all the way…of truly living “passionately” as you point out Patrick. And, Heather, it does take a lot of blood, sweat and tears to follow through all the way. If we look at the people we admire, the overwhelming majority of them persevered through really tough circumstances and had to learn how to actually apply themselves in ways that would take them where they wanted to go.

    Hi Bruce :)

Hey I felt a little like “Who’s on first” somewhere in the middle there – sure was glad to see the recap in a list – grin.

I think I float a bit between 5 on some topics and 3 on others.

Am reading Crush it! Right now and the #3 topics coupled with the listbuilding mindset I’ve built up over the last few years … things are really gelling!

    Good Stuff!

    Appreciate you,

    Bruce.
I think you’ve completely missed the point in Crush It. Gary was not ever saying everyone has to become an entrepreneur following their passion.

His whole treatise is that if you are continuing to work in a job THAT YOU HATE then you now have no excuse to stay doing it. For example he says the cost of entry to starting something online around your passion is next to zero.

But underlying his whole book’s message is that there’s nothing wrong with people staying in the corporate world, or driving a truck, or baking cakes, or whatever if they love their JOB.

You almost had me click away at calling us idiots, etc. My 5 cents’ worth.

Hey Stew thanks for your input…I do appreciate it even an opposing viewpoint. I am sorry if I implied that everyone needs to become an entrepreneur. I know plenty of people who love their jobs…but isn’t that akin to following a passion. It doesn’t even need to be something that you are passionate about but it could be the relationships that you are passionate about. However, anyone who really loves what they do has somehow connected with a passion that they have in one form or another. I know people who don’t really like their “jobs” that much but they are passionate about the results that they get. I know others who don’t necessarily love the nuts and bolts of their jobs but they love the people they are able to touch through them. They are passionate about that aspect of their lives. I should have been more clear and specify like you did that I was talking about the many people who “hate” what their lives have become mostly because they hate their job or their vocation. Even taking a step toward being an entrepreneur is not for everyone…even those who hate what they do. But, I don’t mind going a bit overboard in a post like this simply to encourage those who are close to the edge…who know what they would like to do…but just are a bit afraid to actually jump in and risk making a change for themselves.

I hope that clears it up just a bit. Thanks again for helping to clarify things a bit more. Again…I should have been more clear. I was simply going on some assumptions that I believed most people understood who I was talking to in the post. I will try to be more clear in the future.

    Hi Bruce,

What a great post! Some amazing and valuable lessons and nuggets. I currently feel that I am in point number four. I am diligently seeking and learning from amazing people like yourself.
I am grateful for the blessing of all that I have.
    Make it a great day!
