Yes You Can Use Skype on Your Samsung Eternity

Yes you can use Skype on your Samsung Eternity!

According to Skype you cannot do this but my son and I figured out how to do it one foggy cold night at my eldest daughter's soccer practice.

I had a conference call coming up on Skype two days later and I knew I would be away from my computer…so my son and I set out on a mission to make it work.

What we found after some searching and some experimentation is that the Samsung Eternity (model SGH-A867) will work with the application Skype Lite. I have created an easy to follow tutorial here:

1. From your Menu screen click on Media Net and then click on "Enter URL"

Samsung Eternity Menu

2. Enter this address:

http://skype.com/m/

This is what comes up:

Phone Type

(Notice it says…"Your mobile was not detected, please select your handset."

3. From the list of phones under Phone model choose "Samsung A737"

(it is not very easy to choose from the list but just be patient…you will get it)

4. You will be taken to the next page with a "Download Now" link…go ahead and download it.

Download Skype

5. You will then be taken through a set up process…enter your skype name and other information including your mobile phone number. YOU MUST ENTER A "1" BEFORE YOUR MOBILE PHONE NUMBER. Otherwise…you will only be able to do messaging.

…That should get you set up.

To access Skype:

1. Go to your menu screen and click on "my stuff"

My Stuff

2. Click on "Games & Apps" (you will then be able to see the Skype icon and you can open that.

Games & Apps

3. You will get a screen that just lets you know that you do use your data airtime minutes. But, if like me, you have an unlimited data plan it does not matter. This is true only for sending messages though. When you actually make a call you will be charged actual phone minutes. So…when you call through your Skype account it will connect you through an external phone number and it will use your airtime minutes that you have for your phone…not your data.

Also…so you know…your touch screen does not work except with the lower part with this application. You need to use the arrows and buttons down below to make it work. The three dots are what you push to make a Skype call on the right side and access the menu on the left. You use the up and down arrows to highlight what is on your screen. You use the right and left arrows to access the different features available that you see on the very top on either side of the word "Contacts." You use the word "OK" to accept your choices.

One more word…if you want to receive calls through skype you will need skype credits to do so. It does cost money to receive calls. So…if you want to avoid the fees simply make sure your calls through skype are outbound.

I was able to attend my skype conference call from my daughter's soccer practice and it worked out very well. I made sure that I called in to be included in the conference call rather than being called.

Anyhow…I just wanted to share that it is indeed possible to download and use the Skype application on your Samsung Eternity even though the software was not really designed for this phone.

I hope this helps…let me know your thoughts below…Thanks and please RT even if you don't own one of these phones so that others can find this info. as well.
